The state of Oaxaca has one of the historical collections of tubular bodies of the world's most extraordinary. Sixty-nine organs built between 1686 and 1891 remind us today the glorious musical past of Oaxaca, where a church was not considered complete if it did not have a body. It is likely that more bodies are found in villages Oaxaca that have not yet been reported and urges register before they disappear.

Although there have been hundreds of pipe organs in churches in Oaxaca since 1544, the earliest reference we have of a body in the state , most of them have been lost over time due to deterioration, natural disasters, neglect and / or intentional destruction. However, the relatively small sample of sixty-nine currently existing tools presents a fascinating panorama of art of organ over two centuries.

FEATURES OF BODIES

OAXACAN
  • Most bodies are in a quite authentic, since they have been little altered or upgraded over time. This is due in large part to the isolation and poverty of many of the communities in which they are located and the abandonment and neglect when they stop working.
  • preserve elements of the English Baroque organ building at the same time they have developed special features in Oaxaca. These include a rounded profile of the lower housing and sumptuous style polychrome decoration boxes and tubes of different instruments eighteenth century.
  • As a group, are older than the bodies of other states in Mexico. About half of them dating from the eighteenth century or earlier, while most of the organs of other states from the nineteenth century.
  • Most of them were built in the state of Oaxaca, with the exception of some late examples produced in Puebla. All organs are located in churches, none is within a museum.

RESTORED ORGAN IN OAXACA

Since 1991, seven bodies of the following communities have been restored and now operate:

  • Tlacochahuaya
  • San Andrés
  • Zautla
  • Santa Maria de la Natividad Tamazulapan
  • The Catedral de Oaxaca (Oaxaca City)
  • Yanhuitlán
  • The Basilica de la Soledad (City of Oaxaca)
  • Santa Maria Assunta Tlaxiaco
  • Zapotitlán Lagunas (partially restored)

sixty-one remaining instruments in varying states of disrepair. Some are only an outer box empty or inner parts, while others are almost intact. Despite his condition, all bodies provide important information about construction techniques and the musical characteristics of a bygone era. It is very important to conserve now so that in future more complete bodies and sound can be restored again after many years of silence.
